Recently, I have been watching more horror movies – it just felt like a natural thing to do when transitioning from summer to autumn.
I do not consider myself a horror movie aficionado and do not watch just any horror movie that comes my way.
I do not particularly like gore and do not enjoy brutality that has no special purpose besides shocking the audience.
I like weird topics delivered with a twist that burrows deep in your mind. If a movie makes me think about something more than senseless bloodshed, it lands on my list of favourites.
I want to share with you this list of mine!
The movies were ordered based on my newly created horror movie rating system – in addition to the movies being my fav, they also get rated from 1 to 5 to appreciate their uniqueness and the level of enjoyment they had provided to my person.
My Favourite Horror Movies
Rating: from 1 stitch (I just like it) to 5 stitches (it brought something new to my sad life).

Delicatessen (1991)
Synopsis: Post-apocalyptic surrealist black comedy about the landlord of an apartment building who occasionally prepares a delicacy for his odd tenants.

Rating: 5 stitches because I love a good dystopia. Technically, it is a movie about food which I like on principle.

Ringu (1989)
Synopsis: A reporter and her ex-husband investigate a cursed video tape that is rumored to kill the viewer seven days after watching it.
View on IMDb
Rating: The original deserves a 5-stitch rating.

The Ring (2002)
Synopsis: A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it.

Rating: 5 stitches. To me, this is the only remake in the history of Hollywood remakes that not only doesn’t suck but brings something new to the base material.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Synopsis: Do I even need to say anything here?
View on IMDb
Rating: 5 stitches.

Constantine (2005)
Synopsis: Supernatural exorcist and demonologist John Constantine helps a policewoman prove her sister’s death was not a suicide, but something more.

Rating: 5 stitches for the tats. I also think this movie has the best portrayal of Satan in cinema history.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005)
Synopsis: After being wrongfully imprisoned for thirteen years and having her child taken away from her, a woman seeks revenge through increasingly brutal means.
View on IMDb
Rating: 5 stitches for the torture scene that makes you almost feel it justified.

Carrie (1976)
Synopsis: Carrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom.
View on IMDb
Rating: 5 stitches because everybody loves a revenge-killing spree on prom night.

The Cremator (1969)
Synopsis: A 1969 Czechoslovak dark comedy horror set in Central Europe during World War II, a demented cremator believes cremation relieves earthly suffering and sets out to save the world. Original title – Spalovač mrtvol.
View on IMDb
Rating: 5 stitches because it is both grotesque and scary.

The Purge (2013)
Synopsis: A wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal.
View on IMDb
Rating: 3 stitches awarded for the delightful twist on the home invasion genre.

The Toxic Avenger (1984)
Synopsis: Tromaville has a monstrous new hero. The Toxic Avenger is born when meek mop boy Melvin falls into a vat of toxic waste. Now evildoers will have a lot to lose.
View on IMDb
Rating: 3 healthy stitches. It is not a horror movie, but it is classified as such. I do not know why because even at the time of its release, some of the scenes were over the top and into the sea of ridiculous.

Death Becomes Her (1992)
Synopsis: When a fading actress learns of an immortality treatment, she sees it as a way to outdo her long-time rival.
View on IMDb
Rating: 3 stitches for the length of this treat.

The Wicker Man (1973)
Synopsis: A puritan Police Sergeant arrives in a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl, who the Pagan locals claim never existed.
View on IMDb
Rating: 2 stitches for the animal masks.

Let the Right One In (2008)
Synopsis: Oskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.
View on IMDb
Rating: 2 stitches because an underage vampire love story is what we all need from time to time.

The Others (2001)
Synopsis: During World War II, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands becomes convinced that the home is haunted.
When I watched it for the first time, I thought it was very smart. And it was, for its time.
View on IMDb
Rating: A solid one stitch because this movie is cosiness and comfort for me. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Birds (1963)
Synopsis: A wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people.
View on IMDb
Rating: One stitch because there has never been a better movie where animals take their revenge on humans.

The Wrong Turn (2003)
Synopsis: Chris and a group of five friends are left stranded deep in the middle of the woods after their cars collide. As they venture deeper into the woods, they face an uncertain and bloodcurdling fate.

Rating: Another classic! One stitch and well-deserved!
